Jan Chappell and I (Kathy Walker) are so pleased with the ministry God has given to us. He has used our passion for sewing to bless others and we are humbled before Him when we hear of how the work is blessing others who serve with us. It is so great to know that, no matter what our limitations are, He can still work through us to bless others. The following is a testimonial from one of our dear dressmakers, Marlene Goodfield:
In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)
What a JOY to be a blessing to others!!! Right from the first days when I knew being in a wheelchair would be my life, I have asked my Lord, “Now what is my purpose in life?” Then, one day I happened to be reading the Bethany eBulletin and the title “Sewing Dresses for Little girls in Sierra Leone” jumped out at me. AHH…HAH, I thought. Now there is something I CAN do! God has blessed me with the talent to sew, so why not use that talent to serve others I thought.
I got in touch with Jan about the possibility of attending one of the sewing days at the church last spring, explaining that I would need someone to pick up my sewing machine as I have to travel by paratransit. Without any hesitation, Jan said she and Kathy would come by to get my machine, and sure enough they did with smiles on their faces.
So, off I went to spend the day sewing with the ladies. I did that on two occasions and little did I know then this would become my passion. I sew now in my apartment every day, and there are no words to describe the tremendous joy and excitement I feel as I complete each little dress. Seeing the smiles on the faces of the little girls who have already received a dress says it all. I just can’t make enough of them!!!
Getting up each morning and thinking, “I’m going to make a little girl happy today for the dress I make.” This thought overwhelms me with so much joy and thanks to God for the talent He has blessed me with. With each dress goes a simple prayer that God will bless the little girl receiving this dress as much as He has blessed these hands with the skill to put the dress together. Each and every day has purpose and meaning now, and I am so extremely grateful to all the ladies who work diligently putting the dress kits together.
Also special thanks to Lynda and Lucie for dropping the kits off to me each week. What an awesome God we serve!!! Thanks to Bethany for giving me the opportunity to serve in this ministry. Keep them coming Jan and I’ll continue to enjoy putting them together!!!
