As we look forward to a new year, I have a simple challenge. And, it’s one that’s pretty good, because it comes from Jesus: This is the year to love your neighbours.
I mean, this is what Jesus calls us to do in Mark 12:30-31 (NLT):
“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”
And, I think that’s a good place to start this new year.
You might be thinking to yourself, “Well, why not start with loving God?” The answer is simple and clear – in order to love God, you are to do what He says, which is to love your neighbour.
In loving your neighbour, you accomplish the two commands with the same action.
So, this my challenge for you and for me – to notice our neighbours, listen to them, and love them. And, while I believe the word “neighbours” for sure relates to those who live near us, it also encompasses the people in our offices and schools, at the hockey rink and grocery store.
In every area of life, we are to be on the look out for ways to love our neighbours.
I think that’s a good way to begin 2020. As Bob Goff writes:
“We’re not supposed to love only our neighbours, but Jesus thought we should start with them.”
And, I think that’s true.
